Seismic Performance of Building Model Contest 3.0
On July 29, Structural Engineering Forum (SEF) and the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) organized the 3rd edition of the Seismic Performance of Building Model Contest, which was held at AIT.
This competitive event is the brainchild of Mr. Binay Karna, a highly accomplished PhD student in structural engineering.
Over the years, CSI Bangkok has been one of the official sponsors of the event.
Participation and the competition
More than 80 students from seven countries (Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and Pakistan) took part in the international competition.

The goal of the challenge: to design and build balsa wood models and test their structural integrity on a seismic shake table that simulated real earthquake conditions.
25 teams registered for the contest with just over half (16) battling it out in the final round.
It was a challenging and competitive contest that not only tested the participants’ knowledge, creativity, and determination but also demonstrated their ability to apply engineering principles under pressure in a realistic, hands-on setting.

Each team was mentored by a postgraduate student from AIT, which created a learning and collaborative environment for all.
The competition was fierce and intense but also a huge learning experience. Participating students expressed their excitement throughout the event.
Awards and Recognition
In the end, only one team could claim the top prize. PICE-Davao, representing the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, earned the top honor with their model, which successfully withstood both the applied loads and seismic conditions.

The most innovative idea also received recognition and an award. Sponsored by Kanazawa University, Japan, this award went to a team from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand.

Dr. Naveed Anwar attended the event as a special guest speaker and observer, while also lending his support and inspiration to the teams.
“This event is expanding rapidly and has become one-of-a-kind. CSI strongly supports such initiatives that help students see real-world engineering in action,” he noted.

After the event, Dr. Naveed presented the prizes and awards to the winning team, PICE-Davao at the CSI Bangkok office.

The seismic challenge proved to be an invaluable learning experience and a highly rewarding opportunity for everyone involved.
