Nexus-Build Workshop​

Overview

The NEXUS-BUILD Workshop, held on September 20, 2024, at the Century Park Hotel, was organized for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to explore emerging technologies and innovative practices in building and bridge design, with a focus on seismic engineering.

The event commenced with welcome remarks by Engr. Rolando M. Romero, Executive Vice-President of Alphatec Chemical Corporation, followed by opening remarks from Usec. Ador G. Canlas, Undersecretary of Technical Services and Information Management Service at DPWH.

The NEXUS-BUILD workshop featured eight highly technical sessions such as Design of Buildings for Earthquake and Design of Buildings using Seismic Isolation by Prof. Taiki Saito of Toyohashi University.

Other topics and presentations included:

  • Procedures for Designing Base-Isolated Buildings: Comparison of Japan and US Practice – Dr. Demin Feng, Principal/Consultant, Petro Jikken
  • Quality Control and Test Requirements for Seismic Isolator – Engr. Javier Gimenez, Deputy Manager, Kawakin Core-Tech Co., Ltd.
  • Review of Seismic Design of Bridges in the Philippines – Dr. Rodolfo P. Mendoza Jr. Principal, Petro Jikken

 

The workshop also featured insightful presentations by Dr. Naveed Anwar, CEO of CSI Bangkok. He discussed the importance of seismic design of bridge as well as next generation tools and methods needed in the design of bridges

There were even a few interactive Q&A sessions and panel discussions in between the presentations that further enriched participants’ understanding of these critical topics.
