The Future of Structural Engineering • Cinnamon Life, Colombo, Sri Lanka • June 8, 2026
In collaboration with gapHQ, CSI Bangkok conducted two back-to-back technical seminar sessions at the Cinnamon Life in Colombo Sri Lanka to explore the future of structural engineering.
Under the theme The Future of Structural Engineering, each seminar was developed for a specific, invite-only audience, focusing on technical content relevant to different areas of structural engineering practice.
Session 1: Integrating Learning and Practice for Building Engineering
The first seminar was designed for university students, academics, structural/design engineers, and consultants interested in building design.



Followed after welcome remarks, Dr. Naveed Anwar led a keynote on Integrated Learning and Practice for the Design of Buildings and Structures, which explored how engineering education can be more effectively connected with professional practice.




The presentation emphasized the importance of developing a strong understanding of structural behavior and design principles before applying them to practical engineering problems. Through technical examples and live demonstrations, participants were introduced to modern design workflows that help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional engineering practice.



The seminar also highlighted the importance of continuous learning and the adoption of modern engineering technologies, equipping participants with knowledge that supports both academic development and future professional careers.
Session 2: Future Directions in Bridge Engineering
The second seminar was tailored for consulting engineers, representatives from government agencies, bridge owners, contractors, and infrastructure professionals involved in the planning, design, construction, and management of bridge projects.




In his presentation, Future Directions in Bridge Engineering: Planning, Design, Construction and Management, Dr. Naveed Anwar discussed the evolving demands of bridge engineering and the need for more integrated approaches throughout the project lifecycle. Topics included planning methodologies, analytical modelling, design coordination, construction considerations, and long-term asset management.





The seminar demonstrated how modern digital workflows and engineering technologies can improve efficiency, collaboration, and decision-making while supporting the delivery and maintenance of safer and more resilient bridge infrastructure.





Technical Discussions and Networking
Both seminars concluded with interactive question-and-answer sessions, giving participants the opportunity to discuss technical challenges and exchange ideas with the speaker. The event concluded with a networking dinner, where attendees from academia, consulting firms, industry, and government organizations continued discussions and explored opportunities for future collaboration.
