Next-Gen Structural Engineering Dinner and networking with Dr. Naveed

CSi Bangkok Hosts Dinner Dialogue on Next-Gen Structural Engineering

Next-Gen Structural Engineering Dinner & Networking • Shangri-La Colombo • March 1, 2026

Organized by CSi Bangkok

CSi Bangkok hosted a dinner and networking at the Shangri-La Colombo. Held under the theme “Next-Gen Structural Engineering: Learning · Technology · Practice,” the gathering was designed as a platform for thoughtful dialogue on how emerging technologies, evolving design methodologies, and integrated learning frameworks are shaping the next generation of structural engineering practice.

This exclusive event invited senior members of the structural engineering community for an evening of discussion on the future direction of the profession. Over 40 leading engineers, academics, and industry professionals from across Sri Lanka joined to exchange perspectives on the growing role of artificial intelligence, advanced computational tools, and collaborative professional development within the discipline.

Discussion Led by Dr. Naveed Anwar

The conversation was hosted by Dr. Naveed Anwar, CEO of CSi Bangkok and Adjunct Faculty at the Asian Institute of Technology. Dr. Naveed has been actively engaged with the Sri Lankan engineering community since 2000 through capacity-building initiatives, academic collaboration, and infrastructure-related projects.

During the discussion, Dr. Naveed explored several key themes shaping the future of the profession, including:

  • The evolving role of structural engineers in an AI-enabled design environment
  • The integration of artificial intelligence into engineering workflows
  • Parametric approaches to bridge and building design
  • The importance of strengthening connections between professional practice, technology development, and engineering education

A demonstration of AI-assisted bridge design and structural monitoring technologies generated active discussion among participants, particularly regarding how these emerging tools can enhance engineering decision-making and improve infrastructure performance.

A Platform for Professional Exchange

The dinner dialogue encouraged open conversation among attendees, who included current and former presidents of the Sri Lanka Society of Structural Engineers, senior academics, government engineers, and leading consulting practitioners.

By bringing together experienced professionals from across the engineering community, the event provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on how the profession can adapt to rapid technological change while continuing to uphold the fundamental principles of structural safety, resilience, and engineering judgment.
