RC Beams analysis, design and detailing

RC Beams analysis, design and detailing

Overview

RC Beams are the most designed members in structural engineering practice, and perhaps the most taken for granted. Most of us design hundreds of them but often may miss the reasoning behind the computations.
In this hands-on online workshop, we will explore RC Beams analysis, design and detailing through theory and practical sessions using Eagle Eye – Gear web-based applications. Participants will examine beam behavior, code-based flexural and shear design, and reinforcement detailing before applying these principles in Gear – from structural analysis and ETABS import to detailed reinforcement design.

Title: RC Beams analysis, design and detailing

What you will learn

  1. From loads to demand in one view — how geometry, loads, deformation, shear, moment, and stress connect as one continuous load path for a single beam.
  2. The analysis behind the diagrams – how the stiffness matrix method is assembled and solved in real time, using the same method taught in the classroom.
  3. How the code decides — how the same section responds differently at increasing demand levels, moving from singly reinforced, to doubly reinforced, to inadequate, and why.
  4. Design checks you can defend – step-by-step solutions with every symbol and governing code clause shown, so results can be verified and reviewed with confidence.
  5. Design vs. investigate – the difference between designing for required steel and checking capacity of steel already provided, including how the demand-capacity ratio (DCR) is computed.
  6. The four stages of reinforcement – how reinforcement moves from computed, to required, to provided, to detailed, and how the DCR is checked against provided steel for every load combination.
  7. One workflow, multiple starting points – how forces from ETABS, SAP2000, or Excel, or from frame and beam models built directly in the platform, all follow the same transparent path to final reinforcement detailing.

RC Beams concepts

Key Takeaways

  • See the complete beam design process made transparent, from applied load to final rebar detailing, with no step hidden.
  • Understand not just the result but the reasoning: every equation, every code clause, every decision branch.
  • Learn how to bring in forces from tools you already use (ETABS, SAP2000, Excel) and carry them through to a fully detailed, code-checked design.
  • Walk away able to both design a section for new demand and investigate the adequacy of existing reinforcement.
  • Gain practical, ready-to-use familiarity with Eagle Eye – Gear for your own project work.

About Eagle Eye

Eagle Eye is a platform for software, apps, learning resources, and much more in the field of structural engineering. Here you will find everything from bridge design and column analysis to model visualization, AI-powered workflows, and specialized design tools. Each product is built to solve a specific engineering problem with interconnected solutions. In this workshop, we will be focusing on RC Beams app on Gear, which is a suite of connected apps for structural analysis, member design, section investigation, and engineering learning.

To follow the live demonstrations and participate in the hands-on exercises, we encourage participants to create an Eagle Eye account if they have not already done so. Eagle Eye provides free access to its core features, while advanced features and additional capabilities are available through affordable tiered plans.
