designing tall buildings with Mark Sarkisian

Designing Tall Buildings – Structure as Architecture

Overview

We are honored to present a special joint webinar on Designing Tall Buildings together with Mark Sarkisian, Partner of Structural and Seismic Engineering at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the most prominent architectural and engineering firms.

Mark’s career extends over 100 major building projects worldwide, including some of the tallest and very innovative structures. His book, “Designing Tall Buildings – Structure as Architecture” (2nd Edition, Routledge), has become a foundational text for structural engineering education and is used as a reference in graduate courses worldwide, including the Structural Design of Tall Buildings course taught by Dr. Naveed Anwar at the Asian Institute of Technology.

This webinar combines Mark’s visionary approach to designing tall buildings. This provides attendees an opportunity to learn from both conceptual design philosophy and applied engineering practice.

Key Topics

Part 1 by Mark Sarkisian:

  • How the world’s most innovative tall buildings integrate structure and architecture
  • The evolution of structural systems from early skyscrapers to today’s supertalls
  • Decision frameworks for selecting appropriate structural systems
  • How nature inspires efficient structural solutions
  • The role of performance-based design in creating resilient buildings
  • Lessons from landmark projects including Jin Mao Tower and Al Hamra Tower

Further discussions will be led by Dr. Naveed in an upcoming part 2 session of this webinar. Date TBA.

Part 2 by Naveed Anwar:

  • How lateral forces flow through different structural systems
  • Visual comparison of system behavior — frames, walls, tubes, and outriggers
  • Understanding drift profiles and stiffness distribution
